Computer Trick: Share Internet Connection from Any Modem (Huawei, ZTE) to LAN / Wireless LAN through ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)

In our dormitory in UP Diliman there hasn't been an internet connection accessible near our rooms Update Jan. 28, 2011: Dilnet is now available at almost every room, just find the nearest router to your room. People here  have two ways to connect to the internet: Go downstairs to the lobby and use wi-fi to connect through Dilnet or get a prepaid modem. I myself connect to the internet through a SmartBro plug-it (Modem: ZTE MF627). SmartBro is oftentimes slow especially in the late morning or in the afternoon. Luckily this internet speed test I took went faster than usual.

Taken 9AM, GMT+8, Didn't expect the result would be this.

Most of my corridor-mates here who doesn't have internet connection and who are very lazy to go down and use Dilnet goes to Chuck's room and ask him to share his Internet (he has a SmartBro plug-it too, but a different model). If it's okay with him or his roommate (who actually owns that modem), he would then do a few things and voila! there's a wifi hotspot in our corridor.

I myself tried sharing my connection but after many trials I've got it to work. (Works well on Windows Vista and 7). Here are the main things I'd like to point out:

1. To share the Internet Connection you must use ICS or internet connection sharing. Read more about that in Google.

2. To use ICS, go to Network Connections (Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center>Manage Network Connections) right-click your modem and choose Properties.

3. On the sharing tab, check "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet Connection" and choose the Home Networking Connection to the network you're going to share your Internet to. In my case I selected Wireless Network Connection.

4. Press Ok. You'll be prompted to redial your modem for the changes to take effect.

5. You have now shared your Internet Connection!

6. For those who would like to make it a WiFi hotspot, you'll have to create a wireless ad-hoc to share the connection. Know more about that in Google.

7. Go to Network and Sharing Center (see above) and click on "Set up a connection or network".

8. Select "Set up a wireless ad-hoc (computer-to-computer) network" and click next.

9. Click next, type your Network Name, select your Security Type (WPA2-Personal for a safer connection) and type in your password.

10. You should see that your network is ready to use. Other network users can now connect to your Wireless  Connection.

11. In any case that your modem network disappears when it disconnects, before you disconnect, right click and create a copy of it. Rename it to anything you like.

12. Go back and follow Step 2-5. 

13. Disconnect to your connection and connect to the created connection.
